We made the conscious decision to make Steirerkraft a carbon-neutral brand.
This decision affects the entire production chain – from the farmers through to the finished products. By reducing our carbon footprint and offsetting unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions via certified climate protection projects, we take responsibility for making our world a better place for future generations.
Our path to carbon neutrality
Technically, we define carbon neutrality as a Scope 3 carbon-neutral PCF.
But what exactly does that mean?
Let’s begin by explaining some of the most commonly used terms:
Step by step to more sustainability.
Steirerkraft aims to minimise its carbon footprint. To this end, we’ve long since introduced measures that help us avoid generating greenhouse gases in the first place. Where they’re unavoidable, we reduce them as much as we can. But despite our best efforts, it’s impossible to prevent emissions completely. So then we consciously and voluntarily compensate for these emissions via certified climate protection projects. .
PCF stands for “Product Carbon Footprint” – in other words, the CO2-footprint of a product. Basically, this includes the amount of greenhouse gases that are directly or indirectly generated by the product in question.
Scope 3 counts all emissions down the entire value chain. In the case of Steirerkraft, that means all the way from the field to the shop shelf. In other words, it includes the emissions generated by our contract farmers’ tractors when they harvest their fields, or by the lorries that deliver our wares to the supermarkets. To revert back to technical terms, it means we include not only our Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from our own energy plants), but also Scope 2 emissions (greenhouse gases that are generated indirectly in the course of powering our production plants) plus all Scope 3 emissions (all other indirect emissions down the entire value chain of our products).

Have you ever heard the saying “You should always put your own house in order first”?
We took this advice to heart when we opened our zero-waste Steirerkraft Kernothek store, which plays a small but tangible and important part in helping to reduce plastic waste in the region. The zero-waste store raises awareness for sustainable shopping practices and promotes a mindful approach to food.
We also attach importance to green electricity, which is why we’ve not only set up a charging station for electric bikes and cars on our company site, but also installed photovoltaic panels on large sections of our production hall roofs so that our entire supply comes from 100% green electricity.
Biodiversity, regionality
We protect resources,
wherever we can.
For many years now, we’ve been running our “bee happy – Steirerkraft helps our wild bees” project in cooperation with the Nature Conservation Society. This raises public awareness and protects and promotes biodiversity in the insect and plant worlds. Because without wild bees there would be no pollination, and no pumpkins or other crops. And without Styrian pumpkins, there would be no delectable Styrian PGI pumpkin seed oil.
Steirerkraft stands for regional, natural foods of outstanding quality. We guarantee the origin of our products and our value chain is transparent and verifiable – because regionality is what makes our products so special. Every drop of pumpkin seed oil we produce and every scarlet runner bean we sell supports our contract farmers in Styria. In addition, our broad portfolio of organic products helps to improve soil conditions and biodiversity in our region.

Carbon-neutral products in the Steirerkraft range – The entire Steirerkraft range – from our bottles of premium pumpkin seed oil through to each and every packet of Styrian pumpkin seeds and every tin of scarlet runner beans – is now certified carbon neutral, as of 2022.

In order to compensate for our emissions, we work with reliable, reputable external partners to fund certified Green Energy projects. Our carbon credits meet internationally accepted standards and are approved, monitored and validated by external authorities such as TÜV (Technical Inspection Association).
