The pumpkin seed oil production-process
The production of pumpkin seed oil is widely carried out by hand, requires an instinctive feeling and years of experience. The production process can be divided into several steps: from the harvesting of the pumpkins to the pressing of the seeds to the bottling of the finished Styrian delicacy.
Harvesting and processing: The Styrian oil pumpkins are exclusively drawn from our contract-farmers – where we can rely on highest quality levels at first hand. After that, the pumpkins are washed, dried and caved – getting the pumpkin seeds ready for their next steps.
Roasting: After being dried, milled and mixed with water and salt, the pumpkin seeds are roasted in big, open pans – which gives the seeds their distinct, nutty flavour. After that, the pumpkin seeds are ready for the main step: the pressing.
Pressing: By using the well-tried Styrian stamp pressing procedure, the oil is extracted from the seeds. In this process, gentleness and patience are essential – the traditional stamp press processes the mixture of pumpkin seeds, salt and water in a long, slow process without any additional heating. In this way, we make sure that the oil achieves its incomparable flavour and retains the valuable vitamins and minerals from the seeds.
Resting & bottling: Subsequently, the oil is stored in tanks for seven days before being bottled under strict criteria in terms of quality and hygiene.
