Your Questions
Did you know?
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI, pumpkin seeds and Styrian scarlet runner beans PDO – from origin and production to tips for using Steirerkraft products in your kitchen.
What is Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI?
Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI is a culinary oil traditionally produced using the stamp-pressing method from the seeds of the Styrian oil pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo var. styriaca). The EU PGI seal (Protected Geographical Indication) guarantees that the pumpkin seeds originate from the defined cultivation area in Styria and neighbouring regions of Austria. The oil is characterised by its dark green colour with reddish reflections and its nutty, roasted flavour.
Steirerkraft, based in Wollsdorf, is the most highly awarded producer of Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI.
Further information on EU protection of geographical origin is available from the Association of Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil PGI.
What does PGI mean and what does the seal guarantee?
PGI – Protected Geographical Indication – is a legally regulated EU quality scheme protecting products linked to a specific geographical area. This protection was granted to Styrian pumpkin seed oil in 1996. Since then, the Association of Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil PGI has grown to more than 3,700 members, including around 40 oil mills.
Authenticity is ensured by an individual control number on the band around each bottle. Steirerkraft has been a certified member of this association for decades and guarantees complete traceability for every product – from the Styrian field to the bottle.
How is Styrian pumpkin seed oil produced?
Steirerkraft produces Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI using the traditional Styrian stamp-pressing method in four steps:
(1) Grinding: The pumpkin seeds are finely ground and mixed with water and a little salt to form a paste.
(2) Roasting: The paste is gently roasted in open pans while being stirred continuously. The Steirerkraft oil miller determines the ideal moment for pressing based on aroma, colour and consistency – true craftsmanship.
(3) Pressing: The warm roasted mixture is pressed using the traditional stamp-pressing method – without refining, filtration or additives.
(4) Resting: The oil is left to rest in stainless steel tanks for around seven days, allowing suspended particles to settle naturally.
Can pumpkin seed oil be heated or used for frying?
No! Steirerkraft Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI is intended exclusively for cold dishes. It has a low smoke point and loses its characteristic aroma and valuable components when heated.
Steirerkraft pumpkin seed oil is always used cold: as a dressing for salads, as a finishing oil over prepared dishes such as soups, ice cream or quark-based dishes, or as a spread combined with quark.
The classic Styrian way to start: one part vinegar, two parts Steirerkraft Styrian pumpkin seed oil, plus salt – Styria’s best-known dressing.
What is the difference between PGI and PDO?
PGI (Protected Geographical Indication): The raw material must originate from the defined geographical area, while processing may also take place outside that area.
PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is stricter: cultivation and the entire production process must take place within the defined region of origin.
Steirerkraft works with both quality schemes: Steirerkraft Styrian pumpkin seed oil carries the PGI seal, while Steirerkraft Styrian scarlet runner beans carry the PDO seal. Both product ranges guarantee complete traceability of origin from Styria – the common foundation of the Steirerkraft quality promise.
Why is Steirerkraft considered the most highly awarded pumpkin seed oil?
Steirerkraft Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI has received more quality awards than any other pumpkin seed oil producer in Europe. The most important include: 25 Gold Awards as an Award-Winning Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil Producer at the Styrian State Awards, 12 awards from Gault&Millau, 11 DLG Gold Medals in 2025 from the German Agricultural Society, as well as the 2018/2019 Pumpkin Seed Oil Championship as the “Best of the Best” pumpkin seed oils.
These awards are granted on the basis of independent tastings and quality inspections and therefore provide objective recognition of consistently high quality.
Steirerkraft pumpkin seed oil is available in both conventional and organic quality – both ranges have received DLG Gold Medals.
