Styrian Witch Fingers
Bloody witch fingers make for a spooky sight – but they taste all the more delicious for it.
Difficulty: easy Total time: 1 h 30 min Portions: 40
Dessert with pumpkin seeds
Shortbread Dough
- 120 g butter (soft)
- 120 g sugar
- 1 egg (medium)
- 250 g wheat flour (plain)
- 40 g Steirerkraft ground pumpkin seeds
- 40 pcs Steirerkraft natural pumpkin seeds (for the "fingernails")
- red jam (e.g. redcurrant, strawberry, raspberry), for the "blood"
Preparation
For the dough, beat the butter and sugar until fluffy, then mix in the egg. Quickly work in the flour and the finely ground Steirerkraft pumpkin seeds. Cover the dough and let it rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180 °C (355 °F) conventional heat. Cut off small pieces of the dough and shape into little rolls (about the size of a real finger). Shape them a little thicker at the knuckles and carefully score creases with a knife for the joints. Press one pumpkin seed onto the tip of each finger as a “fingernail” and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake the fingers in the preheated oven for about 10–15 minutes. Once cooled, dab a little red jam onto the cracks for the perfect Halloween shudder.
Don't tell anyone
For an even spookier effect, you can even dye the “fingernails” blood-red. To do this, briefly toss the whole natural pumpkin seeds with a little food colouring in a freezer bag.
